DANIEL'S SALVAGED A MAP. I KNOW WHERE THEY ARE JACK

"Yerss."

"Teal'c?"

"Indeed Daniel Jackson."

"Indeed Teal'c?"

"Oh Teal'c, you've remembered?"

"I have Colonel Carter."

"It is interesting?"

"Very Interesting."

"Remembered what?"

"Daniel remember a few days ago, Teal'c said he'd seen Doctor Grange before."

"Shes not here anymore Sam, as I'm sure you know."

"I know, I let her go the day before Professor Heslop left. Teal'c what have you got, where did you see her?"

"Colonel Carter if you recall when Jonas Quinn and myself placed Doctor Langham, formerly of Area 51, into martial custody. Amongst his personal effects was a wallet purse. The contents of that wallet were of no interest to the case in hand, at that time. It was in that wallet that I saw the image of Doctor Grange."

"A photograph?"

"Yes, head and shoulders only."

"In his wallet Teal'c?"

"Yes Daniel Jackson?"

"Just her photograph Teal'c?"

"Yes, there were no others images contained within the wallet."

"So shes tied in with Doctor Langham."

"Yerss."

"Ah, you're all here. Okay then. Good morning. Or should I just say morning."

"Sir do you want some breakfast?"

"Maybe a bit later Carter, when my body realises I'm up, awake, and moving around."

"Yeah I feel a bit like that myself Sir."

"I feel refreshed."

"Teal'c you always feel refreshed."

"Indeed I do, ha hahh."

"Sir Teal'c remembers where he saw Doctor Grange."

"Grange, she left the range days ago. Go on then T. Are you gonna tell me she was in the ring on ladies mud wrestling night?"

"Yes O'Neill, that is where I saw her."

"You're kidding me??"

"Yes I am."

"Hahh, funny guy! So Grange, where did you see her?"

"O'Neill I saw a portrait picture of her in the personal wallet purse of one disgraced Doctor Langham, Astrophysicist formerly of Area 51."

"Really. Now that's interesting."

"Carter, Daniel?"

"Sir we think maybe they were seeing each other."

"Yeah Jack definitely seems like they were an item."

"Gruesome twosome. Erm, well Langhams off-world and hopefully there isn't another Gate knocking about. Harrys off-world so there probably isn't. So whats what?"

"Sir you know she tried to sabotage the research for the Nebulium home world."

"Sabotage?"

"Yes Sir she gave me false information."

"You sure about that?"

"Yes Sir, absolutely."

"Indeed she did O'Neill, we are certain about that fact."

"What level of clearance has she got?"

"I didn't look that up but its more than high enough to be permitted to work here on one of our projects. Jack Sam sent her packing after two days."

"Yes you did didn't you Carter?"

"Didn't feel comfortable with her. It was clearly evident she was up to something."

"Something like petty revenge for splitting her and her beau up?"

"Jack that would make more sense wouldn't it."

"That is a sensible conclusion O'Neill."

"Not sure Sir. The fact of the matter is she tried to sabotage us and no matter the reason, its not something that can be allowed to happen. I was going to take it up with you after we'd recovered Captain Amerson and Major Davis and the others."

"I see. And what do you suggest we do Carter?"

"General if I hadn't have been in.. ..not infected.."

"Drugged?"

"Yeah okay, if I hadn't have handled that obsidian fragment and caught the residue of that hallucinogenic drug, if I hadn't of had that dream then the only information we would have had to rely on was hers. We would have still been looking for the Nebulium galaxy in the Redderain system. And its absolutely nowhere near there. So in my opinion that's an extremely serious breach."

"Breach.. ..leave that with me."

"Yes but Sir it.."

"Its alright Carter leave it with me."

"Yes Sir."

"Whats up Daniel. You found a map, a map to where?"

"Jack, we've found longitudes and meridians."

"Really? Longitudes and meridians. Sounds like we're going for a ride. Where we going with this Daniel?"

"Look, look at these."

"What?"

"These."

"Yeah I'm looking, little tiny painted bits of stone. Little painted stone slabs. Daniel, ha ha, what have you been doing with your time?"

"No, no Jack look."

"Daniel are my eyes open? You know I can see much better now don't you?"

"Oh yeah sorry Jack. Over the years several caches of artefacts have been unearthed in Belize, including these. Professor Heslop sent them over to me, they're on loan. Apparently they were in storage in a museum in New York."

"Wow! So they're show pieces then?"

"Jack seriously, look, they're little pieces of rock. If you arrange them in a certain pattern it makes.."

"A bigger rock."

"Well yes, but its significant."

"What the colours or the shape?"

"Both."

"I can see you've had your hands full with this Daniel."

"Teal'c and I have been working on it full out. I had a feeling about this."

"I've got a feeling too Daniel, a very disturbing feeling."

"That's the supernatural ambience.. ..its coming off the rocks."

"Ooouuww!"

"No I mean it."

"So do I."

"Okay to the map. Right look at this Jack."

"It looks like an early learners jigsaw puzzle."

"It is a puzzle. Watch this."

Daniel arranged the tiny little bricks to form a wall. Some of the bricks were coloured.

"Oh okay that's err, a little wall. Very pretty. Daniel can I go back to my quarters now and carry on sleeping for a while?"

"No Jack no. I'm telling you, we've found a map, we can get inside the pyramid, that's what Teal'c and I have been working on. Just watch this now."

He rearranged the bricks to make two even smaller walls. Again there was coloured bricks running through the length.

"Oh okay, two little walls, rrright. What is this Daniel, a flea circus?? Carter are you with me on this. Am I seeing things clearly because I was having such a lovely comfortable sleep. Am I still dreaming, surely I couldn't have been dragged out of my sleep to come and watch Daniel and Teal'c playing on the Briefing Room conference table with tiny little toy bricks."

"Sir two little brick walls, but Daniel and Teal'c have explained their findings to me, its very very interesting Sir."

"Ohhkay. Its coffee time yeah?"

Colonel Carter jumped up and ran down the stairs to the Control Room.

"Coffees on the way Sir."

"Sweet. Sorry Daniel carry on. I'm err.. ..just carry on."

"Thanks Jack. Do remember I mentioned to you about the work Teal'c and I were doing on the stone slabs and a weather report. Teal'c was looking at some pictographs."

"I remember Daniel, yep I do. Carry on please."

"Okay let me walk you through this really quickly. We've found a map to the pyramid. These little bricks here that Professor Heslop sent us, they em, look, you see what I'm doing now. You see the colour stones, each time they form a different pattern, but if we submerge this pattern into three dimensional effect it forms a network of tunnels."

"Hows that? Lets see it."

"I was doing some work with Teal'c and Sam just before you came in. We've put a hash model together on the computer to show you.

The maps based on two factors, firstly the four Canopic g_ds can be represented by colours, black, white, red and yellow. I think I also mentioned that they're each assigned to one of the four cardinal points of the world, Kan is east and red. Mulac is north and white. Ix is west and black and Cauac is south and yellow."

"Yeah, okay."

"Right now so we have four colours representing points, longitudinal and latitudinal points. You remember the weather report?"

"Yes, the weather report, how nice, pressure building, thick and hazy fog."

"We're getting there. Lets just take a look at that weather report. Sam cam you bring it up please. Okay now look, these pictographs were hidden from view. They were placed at the back of the pyramid. What we have here are directions."

"Directions, they look like squiggles."

"They are squiggles Jack. The U.A.V. picked up markings, symbols, figures, on the masonry on different parts of the pyramid. At first I attributed these particular pictographs to the work of Shamans creating what they believed to be symbolic gateways to the spirit world. Look this one represents the rain. Oh, actually all four of them represent the rain."

"And that's a direction?"

"Well if you look at it from my point of view it is a direction because this squiggle here is actually rain. Now I said this map is determined by two factors, one is colour the other is rain."

"Daniel?"

"I know Jack, its coming now. Teal'c."

"Yes Daniel Jackson I have been studying the weather displayed in these pictographs. O'Neill in addition to finding various colour stone slabs located around the pyramid we also discovered petrographic markings on some of the uncoloured masonry blocks. Upon further examination is was clear that these etched petrographic markings corresponded to the markings on the four pictographs that had been painted onto the stone slabs at the back left side ground position of the P7X 377 pyramid.

In discussion with Professor Heslop I was able to further establish that according to ancient Mesoamerican beliefs, the direction and force of the rains was of great significance.

Rain that fell lightly was thought to have come from the east. Rain that fell as in a storm came from the north and the red sunset soaked rain fell from the west. The southerly rains brought summertime fertility."

"Right. I see. Just out of interest, where did you say Cauac figured in all of this?"

"Yes O'Neill your avatar is of the southern heavens, yellow is his colour."

"Um, summertime hey. Nice."

"Yes Jack we've all got our crosses to bear."

"We do Daniel, and I'll try to bear mine with a smile."

"Sir, Daniel?"

"Okay, rain, direction.. ..a direction to where?"

"Right, this is north and look just there, the markings on this pictograph show a lightly falling rain, more or less."

"Ah so you're saying its.. ..east?"

"Yeah east."

"I know you two have put an awful lot of work into this stone slab business. I have to tell ya, you know I've seen so many maps, charts, graphs what have you, but I'm just not seeing anything here. Are you sure about this?"

"Jack I'm certain, Teal'c?"

"We are certain O'Neill."

"Okay then, go for it. But know this, we have to go today. We can't delay. We must go in today. If you can give me something constructive I'll consider going with it. If not, as I said, its in the front door, which to be truthful, I'm entirely reluctant to send anyone in that way."

"Jack this is unconventional but it is constructive. Em, we have the four directions and their corresponding colours, they comprise the longitudinal bearings, and we have the rains, they comprise the meridians."

"The Rains?"

"O'Neill that is the work I have carried out. The close examination of four pictographs in total and numerous petrogaphs. After careful study and analysis of all relevant pyramid markings I concluded that these four pictographs represent the rains of ancients times."

"Rains, right. The rains, well rain me up a map then, lets see it."

"Okay Jack, Sam's put something together for us. If I can just demonstrate with these small, little bricks that Professor Heslop sent me. What we've come up with is a three dimensional scheme of a two dimensional plot. The difficulty we had in piecing together the layout was the way in which its been laid. Instead of finding the directions all on one level they're spread out over all the tiers of the pyramid.

What Sam's done graphically is take the 3d imaging of the pyramid and remove all stone slabs except the colour ones and the ones with rain petrographs. Shes then compactified those onto one level, from that we end up with a network of tunnels. We can navigate the tunnels using the colours of the cardinal points and the rain petrographs that Teal'c came up with. It translates to the longitudes and meridians.

Throughout the pyramid on various slabs we find etchings of the rains. We've taken these to represent turns, directional changes. So where the colour slab sends us in one direction we follow that direction until we come upon a slab with a petrograph of the rain. Now depending on which type of weather it is, light rain, heavy rain, stormy weather, that determines the direction to take next. We follow that direction until we come upon a colour slab, so on and so forth."

"Daniel, well done, really. Now let me ask you, the slabs, the masonry blocks, the ones with colour on, rain on whatever, they're all on the outside of the pyramid and it's a very intricate set up. The tunnels are on the inside and theres thousands of tons of stone in between. How could whoever left this map, how could they know how to exactly correspond whats appearing on the outside of the pyramid with tunnel directions inside the cavern?"

"Yeah, I had the same question but Sam pointed out the only possible way the map could have been made was on a three dimensional basis. What they must have done is paced out the tunnels, mapped them out mentally and then scaled the coordinates in a three dimensional way mapping the design to a pyramidal structure. Sam?"

"That's right. Sir in those days, thousands of years ago and in that part of the world, we've already heard how these people governed events by celestial observations. It probably wasn't a great task for such a people to map the interior of the pyramid onto its outside structure. Such familiarity of the tunnels could only come from someone who was involved in their construction."

"Err, okay, sounds good. So lets see the map then."

"Sir I can show you how its been built up?"

"A movie, nice."

"We start with the shape of the pyramid here. Now we strip the stone away that doesn't either correspond to a colour or a weather petrograph. This is what where left with. Theres two hundred and seventy seven slabs here Sir. In the overall scheme of things its not an awful lot, but if you see it once we compress them on to one level, we end up with a network of tunnels.. ..a matrix of graphical points."

"Daniel I'm sorry but this still isn't looking like a map to me."

"No. No its not, but look at these stones. Look Jack, if I take this first section, arrange these stones the way this petrograph is indicating, east, Sam can we see it, right Jack this is in 3D, see."

"Woh! Crikey, yeah, it sorta looks like a network of tunnels, yeah it does."

"Good isn't it. What Sam's done is take mine and Teal'c's readings, inputted them into the computer and then mapped them in three dimensions."

"Jeez, Daniel, well salvaged. Teal'c nice weather report. Carter?"

"Bona fide cartographers Sir."

"Do you think any of these tunnels will lead to the out of phase domain?"

"Jack without exploring them its impossible to say but I imagine whoever drew them or whoever.. ..it must have been the slaves who built the place who deliberately planted these slabs. To think of it. This is the work of generations of slaves. Each level, storey, took hundreds of years to complete. This map, it must have been something the slaves took great pride in, to have taken such a long time to design it."

"And I presume the Nebulium don't know of its existence since they don't seem to come out of the pyramid. Em, unless of course they're in a host, shell."

"Even then O'Neill it is unlikely that they would detect the pattern. The colours are greatly faded and the petrographs and pictographs are most difficult to detect without the aid of high resolution camera assistance."

"At a push I would say theres a big chance at least some of these tunnels will lead into the out of phase domain."

"In that case we're getting somewhere. Now we know for a fact we can't last long in the pyramid before we become irradiated. If we .."

"If we Sir?"

"Noted. If yous can get into the out of phase environment PDQ you should be alright. That will actually extend the time you have to search for our people."

"Jack do you think.. ..you don't think they'll be any radiation in the out of oh.."

"Have you just realised Daniel?"

"Yeah I have. Em, that's where Nick was staying .. ..obviously no radiation there."

"Daniel is this, diagram.."

"Map O'Neill."

"If you say so. Is this map, finished?"

"Yeah that's everything Jack. Sam's tweaked it up. We've got all the information in there, we've got the straights we've got the turns, yep its all there."

"Okay, Colonel what do you think?"

"Sir we know the Goa'uld have left marks, glyphs there. We know some of these other races, slaves have left markings. We've got addresses off the pyramid, they turned out de facto. Theres no reason why we couldn't then believe that yet other races or slaves have carried on leaving colouring slabs, etchings. Ways in, ways out.

Like Daniel said the pyramid was built over thousands of years so obviously these tunnels are something that's been passed down from generation to generation I imagine. That's quite an achievement Sir.

Daniel and Teal'c kept insisting there was something significant to it. I agree with them Sir."

"Yes Colonel so do I. So do I and we're going to follow it through. Daniel I'm gonna give a green go on this one. It's a much better option than the front door and hopefully we won't actually encounter anybody, thing, until we get right in there. I'm issuing a strike force headed by SG-1 to seek and retrieve the missing personnel."

"Sir when you say we, you don't mean..?"

"Settle down Carter, I don't mean me."

"Okay Sir that's good. I mean its not good but its em, em.."

"Right okay Colonel yeah. Right then. Alls that's left to do is Brief the Teams. Colonel?"

"Yes Sir, SG-1 point. I'm reluctant to take Tony's Team because they, you know they got pretty bruised up in the thirty-one A encounter with the Nebulium, they can stand down on this one. I'll take SG-2 on six. And SGs 8 and 17 Sir."

"Okay Carter and SG-9 as well."

"Yes Sir."

"Excellent. Rally the troops. Daniel have Siler rigg this graphics show up in the Mission Ready Room by 0 eight hundred."

"Will do."

"Okay SG-1, good work. Really excellent work. Lets hope it leads somewhere."

"Hope so Sir."

"Yeah I hope so Jack."

"Indeed O'Neill, it would be most satisfying to return with the missing personnel."

"Yes it would Teal'c, very satisfying indeed."
